How to Find a Detainee

ICE is required to report the detainee's location within 48 hours

  • A-Number (9-digit number) OR

Important to Know:

  • Detainees may be transferred between facilities — check regularly
  • If the person is not found in the system, they may still be in processing
  • Some local jails have contracts with ICE — check local facilities

What is Immigration Bond

A bond is a sum of money that guarantees the person will appear at all court hearings.

  • Minimum bond is usually $1,500
  • Average bond $5,000 - $10,000
  • Bond is returned after case completion
How to Get Bond
  1. 1.ICE may set bond immediately upon detention
  2. 2.If denied — you can request a hearing in immigration court
  3. 3.Judge may reduce the bond amount
  4. 4.You can use a bond company (pay ~15% commission)
Who Does NOT Have the Right to Bond
  • People with certain criminal convictions (aggravated felonies)
  • Those who already have a deportation order
  • Some cases of re-entry after deportation
  • People deemed a security threat

Right to Phone Calls

Detainees have the right to call family and attorney. The facility must provide phone access.

Right to an Attorney

Everyone has the right to legal assistance. An attorney can visit the detainee at the facility.

Right to Consulate

You can contact your country's consulate. They can help with documents and family communication.

Right to Medical Care

Detainees have the right to necessary medical care and medications.

Right to Information

You have the right to know the reason for detention and receive copies of all case documents.

Right to a Hearing

Most people have the right to a hearing before an immigration judge.
